Quilt Quips

I hope everyone is enjoying the Holiday season and may your New Year be bright and filled with much fabric and quilting time!

We are going to continue to schedule Quilt Coopers and hope that you will join us on that Friday for some quality quilting time. Quilt Coopers is open to all who quilt – bring whatever project you are working on whether it be piecing, quilting, appliquéing – the sky is the limit. I am also scheduling my Beginning Needle turn Appliqué class for those of you who would like to learn this fun and relaxing technique.

However, we would like to schedule the rest of our classes based upon any requests that you might have. If you would like a basic class in learning how to quilt, a hand quilting class, a class for kids or any specialty classes, do not hesitate to contact the Shop. We want to be “YOUR” one stop shop for classes.
So…enjoy this cold, crisp weather, put on a pot of coffee, turn on the Christmas music and quilt to your heart’s content. Until next time, Happy Quilting…Mindy Peterson

October Newsletter

Our ANNUAL FALL CRAWL was three successful days of shopping at regional quilt shops. Thank you to all that participated. What a great group of folks to put up with two days of rain and a tornado warning. The Grand Prize winner of the Tutto rolling tote and matching embroidery bag was Tori Blaufuss of Garnett, KS. Second prize which was a tote with $100.00 of notions inside went to Jackie Dunlap of Gardner, KS. Numerous other drawings were held at the individual shops, congratulations to all the winners.

Our sampler quilt for the fall crawl was made by Sharon Neuer and quilted by Beth Dawson. It was made with Nancy Halverson's 12 Days of Christmas fabric and was absolutely beautiful. We still have a couple of kits left if anyone is interested.

From October 13th - October 19th we are participating in the Back in the Swing program. When you purchase a shopping card for $25.00 you can receive %20 off from many participating retailers. All proceeds of the card sales go to research to improve breast cancer survivors' physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing.

Quilt Quips

Fall is here and cool, crisp days are upon us! We have re-vamped our Applique Club into a general quilting club - Quilt Coopers. Anything goes - machine piecing, hand piecing, machine applique, hand applique, machine quilting, hand quilting - the sky is the limit. It's a chance to get together and fellowship as quilting sisters. Even though the class is scheduled for two hours, if anyone would like to grab a little lunch and come back to the Coop to stitch, it's open until 4:30! A great chance to get away from the distractions of home and get those projects finished. Come join us.

It's time to get all of your Christmas quilts and projects started so they will be finished in time.
Check out our list of classes and pick out a couple to help you with your Christmas shopping. Bali Sky can be completed in a couple of days and would make a terrific gift. And speaking of Christmas, we have a great class for all the kids out there who want to learn to sew. Connie is teaching a table runner class that will allow the kids to learn the basics of sewing quilt Charm Squares together while making a Christmas present for mom.

Don't know how to quilt? Roxie's Beginning Quilters Are Quilters Too class is just for you. She will guide you through all of the maze of quilt terminology and techniques. Have you ever wanted to try applique? We have classes scheduled that involve three different applique techniques. Malia's Applique For Dummies is a very basic applique class that anyone can tackle. My class, Beginning Needleturn Applique, involves the traditional needleturn method and my other class, Back Basting, is just another method to simply applique.

Malia is also teaching her Hand Quilting class. She furnishes the hoops and thimbles so you are able to try out those tools first before you make the purchase. Her quilting is exquisite. You really should try out her class. Roxie is also teaching a finishing class. We sometimes forget about the last part of the quilt - the binding and labeling. She will clear up some of the mysteries of how to get that binding looking just right! One of her other classes is the 9 Degree Circle Quilt. Stop by the shop and check out the sample of this quilt. It is beautiful.

Another potential Christmas gift! Stack-n-Whack is back! Connie is bringing back an old standard with new ideas. Bethany Reynolds has a new book out celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Stack-n-Whack method. Make sure you check out Connie's class too! Stay tuned for more on our quilt classes and for now...Happy Quilting. Mindy Peterson

The binding will be machine stitched with mitered corners and you have the option of hand or machine stitching the binding to the back of the quilt. All quilts deserve a label. Ideas for labels and how to make a simple label will be discussed in the class. A finished quilt will not be used in this class. A small square quilt sandwich will be used for the lesson. November 5, 2008~~~~~~10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Bali Sky ~ Have you ever wanted to make a Carpenter’s Star quilt but dreaded those “Y” seams? Beginners take heart! This traditional star is not as complicated as it looks. This is a 36” x 36” finished wall hanging which uses 8 fat quarters and background fabrics for the center and scrappy border. Half square triangle units are sewn into sections and the sections then sewn to form the center of the quilt. Machine piecing & rotary cutting experience required. (Advanced Beginner) Teacher: Mindy Peterson $35.00 plus pattern fee of $8.00

July Newsletter

SEPTEMBER KNITTING CLASS CHANGES - SEE BELOW

Have a safe and fun Fourth of July! Summer's definitely in full swing now, isn't it? Don't forget our new summer hours when you plan to stop by and see the new fabrics we have in the shop. WE WILL BE CLOSED ON JULY 4TH, OPEN ON SATURDAY, JULY 5TH AT 10:00.

Everyone who has a self-healing mat could use these tips from the Olfa booth at the Minnesota Quilter's Guild show that Sharon attended in June this year.

We all have them, but do you know how to keep your mat in top shape?

You can put your mat in the bathtub using 1/4 cup white vinegar to a gallon of tepid water (not hot) and a couple of drops of mild dish washing liquid. You can use a soft bristle brush to create a lather and clean and condition your mat. Then rinse the mat and either air dry or dry with a Turkish towel. Your mat loves moisture and bathing them helps keep them supple.

Here are some other tips:
* You can use a gum eraser that you find at the art store to pull out fibers from your mat, it also leaves no residue. Try a toothbrush across the surface to get those fibers out

Some people have complained of mat odor, what do you do? Try wiping your mat with a gentle cleanser such as Murphy's Oil Soap, vinegar, or Pine Scented Lysol or lukewarm dish washing liquid. Air Dry. You can clean your mat with a napped lint roller to remove fibers and keep lint from getting on the fabrics you are cutting.

Did you know you could also cut on the back of your mat? Also don't leave your mat in extreme hot or cold places as it will warp, once warped you cannot fix the mat.

Use only rotary blades on your mat, snap off blades or utility blades will damage your mat; use an old mat for that, not the same one you use to cut your fabrics.

Don't cut batting and other loosely bound fibers on your mat, the blade is so fine and the mat dense that those fibers will catch in your cuts and could distort your mat. If you choose to cut batt on your mat the at least put a thin cotton between the batt and the mat to prevent fibers from embedding.

Always use a sharp blade. Never roll your mat, store flat, vary your cutting spot on the mat. Use your old mats and distorted mats, for other art projects.

June Newsletter

June, the sixth month of this year! How in the world can that be?

Spring ends and summer begins June 21. It's the time that the flowers are beautiful, and especially for roses. June bugs are pretty active about now, too. June's birthstone is pearl, and the flower of the month is a rose.

June Quotation

Then let us, one and all, be contented with our lot;
The June is here this morning, and the sun is shining hot;
Oh! let us fill our hearts up with the glory of the day,
And banish ev'ry doubt and care and sorrow far away.

Source: James Whitcomb Riley

Whether it's bug fabric, pearl white, roses and florals or just plain HOT sizzling summer brights, you will find it at the Needlenest! New arrivals are here, and boy! are they beautiful! Come see us soon!

Jeanette England made these darling tablecloths for their schools Mother's Day tea. Aren't they (and the children) precious!

Quilt Quips

I’m Mindy Peterson, Needle Nest's new Class Coordinator. My goal is to create classes to fit every level of quilter, from the very new beginner to the advanced quilter who wants to be challenged. We will have several basic classes each quarter where a beginner can learn to quilt or learn a new technique. We will also have special projects each quarter, from small projects such as table runners to large projects such as a bed-sized quilt. For you appliquer’s out there, we are starting an Applique Club (we are in the process of thinking of a cute name) that will take place every second Friday of the month (except November and December). All that is required to participate is to complete the Beginning Needleturn Applique class or have a working knowledge of applique. I am currently planning classes for the next quarter - July/August/September - and hope that you will find at least one or two classes to tempt your creativity.

MARCH Newsletter

LOST AND FOUND

This month we have a heart warming story about our two featured knitters. We'd like to tell you about Donna Overbay (right) from Louisburg and her sister Angela from Alabama. Donna was adopted as a baby, and she has been searching for her sister for about 10 years. Two years ago, she finally found Angela, and after many letters and phone calls they finally met. On one visit, Donna taught Angela to knit. Now, Angela is a knitting knut, and can't get enough of it! Last month, Angela was in Louisburg to visit Donna, and we got to meet them at the "Nest" when they came to learn how to knit socks. Now, they can officially say their lives are knitted together as sisters!

DAVE BENNETT, THE MITTEN MAN!

Take a look at these mittens that Dave knitted. They're pretty tough patterns, and everything Dave knits is just gorgeous!!!

And last, our featured quilter for March is Molly Penrod. Her quilt is just fantastic, and her choice of colors reminds us that Spring is right around the corner. Be sure to stop by and see what's new for Spring, and come show us YOUR projects!
